1-Satin scarf/bonnet/pillowcase.

If you are natural and still are wearing cotton to protect your natural hair, stop it now! You need to invest in a satin bonnet and/ or scarf. Satin is gentler than cotton and less aggressive on natural hair. It helps keep frizz away, avoid breakage and help with moisture retention.

Pro tip: Rest assured that your curls/ coils are fully protected by adding a satin pillowcase to the mix. That means even if your bonnet comes off while you’re sleeping, your hair will still remain protected.

2- Detangling tool.

Every natural should have a good detangling tool because natural hair gets tangled easily and detangling with just your fingers, isn’t sufficient. There are several detangling tools available on the market. You may have to experiment a bit to find the right one for your natural hair’s needs. To start off, you can look into:

  1. The paddle comb from *Kazmaleje. This natural hair tool is God-sent to natural hair. I’ve been able to cut my detangling time in half and retain more length since I started using this tool. Watch a demo of the paddle comb here.
  2. My second recommendation is the Felicia Leatherwood detangling brush. This also is a great brush for detangling natural hair.
  3. You can also look into the Tangle Teezer, or Denman brush. A lot of naturals swear by these detangling tools.

3- Hair Dryer.

The third must-have tool for natural hair is a hair dryer. I love hair dryers because they are multi-purpose.

A hair dryer not only will facilitate and speed up the drying process after styling your hair, but will also come in handy in several other situations as well. For example, if you are a low porosity natural, a hair dryer is a must. It helps a lot when deep conditioning. Low porosity natural hair needs heat to assist with the penetration of moisture in the hair shaft, and a hair dryer does just that.

There are a couple of options when choosing a hair dryer

  1. A hooded dryer, is my favorite. It allows the heat to evenly circulate above your head which in turn facilitates an easier and even drying process. I love it because it frees your hands, therefore while your hair is drying, you can take the time to do other things, such as read a book, write an article, etc…
  2. A Handheld dryer. You may choose to get a handheld dryer instead. With the handheld dryer, you have to switch from one hand to another to ensure your hair is completely dry. You also want to make sure that a diffuser attachment is included with your handheld dryer to allow heat to disperse the airflow of your dryer and spread over a larger area.

4- Hair Steamer.

If you ever find yourself struggling with moisture retention, try steaming your hair. It will change your life. Plus, a hair steamer will elevate your deep conditioning session (especially if you have low porosity hair). I try to incorporate deep conditioning with steam in my natural hair regimen, at least once a month.

There are a couple of options when it comes to choosing a steamer. It truly boils down to how much space you have available.

  1. You may choose to get a salon-style rolling hair steamer which will occupy a good chunk of space.
  2. Or you may opt for a tabletop hair steamer which you can move around much easier. It is all up to you!

5- Hair Pick

A hair pick is such an essential tool for natural hair. It’s perfect to give your natural hair volume, especially for day 1 wash n go and twistouts. when your hair is still flat. And if you’ve been natural for a while, you know how handy a hair pick can be when you’re on the go. I keep a pick in my purse at all times because I never know when I may need to pull it out and get my natural hair back in formation.

I love the hair pick from *Kazmaleje because of its slick design, I can easily slide it in any size purse I carry. Other available pick options can be found here.

6- Deep conditioning cap

A deep conditioning cap is a must-have tool for natural hair as well, especially if you are a low porosity natural and need heat to help in your natural hair routine on the go. For wash days that I don’t want to sit under my hooded dryer, I can heat up my deep conditioning cap in the microwave and put it over my head then go about my business knowing that my natural hair is still getting the care it needs

7- Scalp Massager.

What would I do without my scalp massager!?! Not only does it help stimulate your scalp for hair growth, but it also helps when you need to scratch your scalp without messing up your hairstyle. I keep one by my bedside at all times.

8- Fogless Shower Mirror

A shower mirror is a must-have tool if you wash and or style your hair in your shower as most natural do. They generally come with a suction cup that allows you to affix them to any smooth surface in your shower, then boom, you can see exactly what you’re doing.

9- Microfiber towel

A microfiber towel is a safe way to remove excess water from natural hair after a wash day without causing friction, frizz, and breakage that you would normally experience with traditional towels.

10- Spray Bottle

A spray bottle comes in handy when you’re styling your hair outside of the shower and need to rehydrate, or when you need to quickly refresh your hairstyles mid-week. You can fill them with water or other concoctions that you may use on your hair. Consider a continuous mist spray bottle where you can better control the water flow and not unnecessarily drench your hair with water.

These tools have all been very useful to me on my natural hair journey and will be beneficial to you as well. Remember, having the right tools will make the journey much easier for you.
