5 Tips For a Defined Twistout on Type 4 Hair| leaveit2nessa.com

Today was the day you were supposed to get that super defined twistout you’ve been longing for the longest. But once again it’s a fail.

WTH??? How did that happen? You did everything you were supposed to do, yet you’re not getting this bomb twistout you were expecting. Now you’re looking at the product wondering if the brand lied about its efficacy. Was it really the product? Did you really do everything right? Questions, questions…

Yes, you may have picked the wrong product for your twistout. But it may also have nothing to do with the product. It may just be you, sis.

Hear me out! Too many times we put the blame on the product when really the foundation is the problem. I’ve been there. And based on my experience, there are certain steps you must first follow to give yourself the best chance at a successfully defined twistout.

It truly doesn’t matter how good the styler is if you don’t have a good foundation.

I’ve had good and I’ve had terrible twistouts, and yes just like you, I’ve blamed the styler each time. But it took me styling someone else’s hair to realize what a lot of us do wrong when it comes to twistouts.  So I decided to put it all in text for you. Feel free to watch the video down below to get a better understanding of what I’m referring to.

Let’s talk about the 5 Steps to achieve a well defined twistout.

1- Cleanse.

It’s important to take the time to properly cleanse your hair. If you start styling dirty hair, you are greatly reducing your chances of getting the kind of definition you are looking for because your hair is most likely dry and clogged from previous products. Therefore it won’t properly receive the new products that you are adding.

Pro tip: If you constantly use heavy butters, creams, and/or oils, consider adding a clarifying shampoo to your wash day routine to make sure you remove the buildup that a regular shampoo may not necessarily do.

2- Deep Condition.

The second step to setting yourself up for a well defined twistout is to deep condition. Cleansing is not enough. You want to get in the habit of deep conditioning your hair each time you cleanse. This will ensure that you are providing your hair with the proper nutrients and giving it the moisture that it needs so it can be easily malleable.

Pro tip: “Definition” happens on well hydrated and moisturized hair.

3- Detangle.

The third thing, you want to take the time to properly detangle your hair. Detangle from ends to roots.  You’d be surprised how big of a role properly detangled hair plays in achieving a well-defined twist out.

Pro Tip: Detangle hair in section, then twist that section before moving on to the next one.

4- Trim.

The ends of your hair play a major role in the quality of your twist-out. If you have a lot of bad ends (split ends), it will decrease your chances of a defined twist out. If you are overdue for a trim, it won’t matter how hard you try. You’ll most likely notice that everything looks great except for your ends.

Pro tip: It is recommended that you trim your ends every 3-4 months, twice a year at the very least.

5- Proper drying.

The worst thing you can do when doing a twist out is not giving your twists enough time to properly dry. The most efficient way to dry your twists is by using a dryer. It can be a handheld dryer or a standing hooded dryer. If you don’t have any of these, air drying works as well, but it is more time-consuming. The longer your hair, the more time it needs to dry.

Pro tip: If you must sleep with wet hair, do not cover your hair with a bonnet, buy a silk/satin pillow case instead.

Recommended: Handheld Dryer. Hooded Dryer

Bonus Tip

After you’ve followed all these tips, don’t rush. Make sure you give yourself enough time to properly unravel your twist.
